CSA Week 15

Fall really feels like it’s here this week.  The apprentices have been harvesting beans and digging potatoes like mad, and the fall tradition of MOFGA’s Common Ground Fair is coming up this weekend.

A very proud ring bearer, the somewhat suspicious flower girl, and the glamorous bride, Oltiana Mara Pappas.

Last week’s Boston trip went great.  The apprentices took wonderful care of the farm, and the kids were stellar as ring bearer and flower girl.  Eli luxuriated in his tuxedo, proudly announcing “Mommy, I look fantastic!” when spotting himself in a mirror.  And CJ tried to steal the show in her flower girl dress, no matter that the tulle was ripped all over from when she got tangled up in it.  Just looked a little more haute couture that way.

Upcoming events and more on the farm:

  • Fall CSA sign-up is still underway.  It is $65 for four weeks, October 17/18 to November 7/8.  Fall cheese shares ($48) and mushroom shares ($40) are also available.  Email me or see last week’s newsletter online for more details.
  • Storage potatoes are now available.  35-pound bags of ‘Reba’ variety (seriously, that’s its name!) are $40.  The ’Reba’ is a good all-around use white potato.  Kale, chard and green beans are still available for putting by, as well.
  • Save The Date:  Saturday, October 16th will be the 5th Annual Fall potluck — cider pressing — garlic popping — camp fire get together! Starting at noon, come for an afternoon of great food, fresh cider, and good company.  Rain date:  Sunday, October 17th.
  • And finally, this Thursday, September 23rd, Reba will be speaking about the farm at 5:30 at The Strand Theatre in Rockland.  It’s a free event put on by the Maine Women’s Fund, and all are invited.

Taking their jobs very seriously.

Have a great week, and enjoy cooking!
