Summer veggies arrived with a bang this week! Sweet corn, eggplant, tomatoes, giant Ailsa Craig onions, baby beets… it was a great harvest today, and we can’t wait to share it all with you.
Also, this week brings the long-awaited Chicken shares (as a side note, they look great, ranging from 5-1/2 to 7-1/2 lbs each), as well as the pre-ordered Red House Farm blueberries. Let us know if you have questions about either delivery.
We finally completed the garlic harvest on Friday! The final tally isn’t in yet, but we’re pretty sure we harvested more than ever before. We even had to move on to hanging the garlic up in the CSA pick-up shed to cure, because we ran out of room in our big barn. At least now we know that the CSA pick-ups will always smell great!
We hope that by starting the corn as seedlings and transplanting in the field, we were able to get them to mature early enough to beat the race with the corn earworm. If you do find a worm in your corn, though, think of the sign we once saw on an organic corn farmer’s market stand: 10,000 corn earworms can’t be wrong! The sugars in sweet corn start turning to starch immediately after the ear has been picked, so we harvest the corn right before we head out on CSA deliveries. We encourage you to eat it as soon as possible, to savor that off-the-stalk sweetness.
We had lots of new faces on the farm this week. Our wonderful friends Claire, Tate, Owen and Lucia arrived from Wisconsin on “vacation” (more like to work on the farm, play with the kids, and cook for us). We’re going to be so sad to see them go. Also, we welcomed a new farm volunteer, Lauren. She’ll be with us for about a month, and we’re very glad to have her join the crew. As for our animal friends, click here for a picture of CJ sharing her carrots with Bun-Bun.
As always, let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We hope you enjoy some wonderful meals this week!
