What a week! A surprise light frost hit us on Thursday night and it impacted things all over the farm. Green beans, husk cherries and winter squash were touched, but hopefully not so much as to impact their presence in your share this week. The tomatoes are slowing down, but are still plentiful given the time of year. And we’re clearing out the greenhouses (goodbye eggplant, cucumbers) to make room for fall salad greens (hello spinach!). The sweet potatoes that we started to harvest this week need a week or two to cure, and then they’ll appear in your share.
Speaking of fall salad greens, it will soon be time to sign up for the Fall CSA share. I’ll send out an email this week with the details and the sign-up link, but the share will run for four weeks from mid-October (the week after the summer CSA ends) to mid-November. The fall share this year will cost $90 for four weeks and will include fall salad greens, winter squash, bunched greens (kale and chard and collards), carrots, beets, potatoes, onions, garlic, other root crops, shallots and more. It will be full of veggies you can store for the winter months ahead. Look out in your inbox this week for the sign-up link!
I think we have sold out of beef but will know once it’s back from the butcher this week. Send me an email if you’d like to be on the wait-list.
It’s amazing to compare this week’s share to Week Fifteen last year. Last year we had pulled the tomatoes out of the greenhouse and were giving green tomatoes, and it was our very first Husk Cherry delivery of the year! It’s such a good reminder of how things can vary so much, depending on the little things that add up—rain, sun, soil fertility, the timing of transplants… the list is endless. And though we have a bounty of many things this year, there are a few things that really struggled to size up when we had a dry August (carrots and beets, for example). We will have them in your share eventually, just not in the quantities we like (though hopefully they’ll size up more by the time the fall share comes around).
Have a great week!
