Happy Holidays, dear CSA members and friends.
The farm is pretty quiet these days, except for the not-so-occasional bellow from Cookie the cow. Apprentices have headed on to their next adventures, CJ and Eli are thrilled to have their parents back at their disposal, and guests get to experience a spare bedroom still full of garlic and shallots. We’ve started to build a certified milk room and are slowly making plans for next year.
For the first time ever, we’re putting out an appeal for year-end donations to the Hatchet Cove CSA Financial Aid Fund. In 2014 alone, the fund provided CSA payment assistance to more than twenty-five Mid-coast families, at a cost of nearly four thousand dollars. But the CSA fund is not just about providing food to families in need; it’s about changing the equation of who, in our community, is able to access fresh, organic food. We believe that it should be everyone’s right to feed their family food that is free of pesticides, full of nutrients, and harvested close to home. This fund helps make that dream more of a reality in our community.
`
In the past we’ve held fundraisers, requested donations, and applied for grants to fund the Financial Aid program, and we will continue to do so. Some of the families who have received support applied for aid because they knew that they would need the help; other families experienced unforeseen challenges during the CSA season, and the fund covered their remaining payments. Regardless, every penny that we raise goes directly to cover the CSA shares for Mid-coast families–people who are working very hard, on limited budgets, to feed healthy food to their families.
`
This holiday season, if you’re able, please consider donating to the HCF CSA fund. Donations are tax-deductible, thanks to the Rockland Unitarian Universalist church. Your donation will allow an ever-broadening segment of our Mid-coast community access to healthy, fresh, organic food through the Hatchet Cove Farm Community Supported Agriculture programs.
`
Your donation will do the following:
- $25 covers more than a week of a vegetable CSA share.
- $50 covers more than two weeks of vegetable and egg shares for a Mid-coast family.
- $175 covers half the cost of a CSA share for a family who pays the remainder in manageable installments.
- $400 covers a vegetable share and an egg share in full.
Tax-deductible donations can be sent to:
UURockland (memo line: HCF CSA Fund).

In this month of cookies and treats, we’re already dreaming of a spring full of fresh greens to share with you all. We’re so grateful for the amazing community that surrounds this farm. Thank you, again and again.

Happy holidays, and with love,
Reba and Bill
