Summer CSA Week 12

This week is the start of the alien invasion. You may get them in your share this week or next, but kohlrabi and patty pan summer squash both bear a strong resemblance to small UFOs. And then there are the tomatillos!  Maybe tomatillos appear to be more paper-lantern than UFO, but they’re definitely not your average grocery store fare! I wish we had cilantro to give you along with the tomatillos for salsa this week, but we lost three separate plantings of cilantro due to the lack of rain, so the cilantro that was supposed to be ready along with the tomatillos never matured. Hopefully we’ll have some for you soon, and in the meantime enjoy experimenting with your tomatillos!

As for the kohlrabi, think of it as a cross between a broccoli stem and an apple. Peel it first, and then shred it up in slaws or cut sticks to munch with dip. It’s crunchy and tasty. And if you’re not sure about eating the purslane, remember that it provides more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable. Crazy, right? Crazy and delicious.

Our short-term volunteer Hannah had to leave on Friday after only two weeks at the farm, so we’re now officially short-handed for the fall! If you know of anyone who is interested in living and working on an organic farm this fall, tell them to check out the Apprentice page of our website and get in touch!

Have a great final week of summer, enjoy your veggies, and please get in touch with any questions!
