Welcome to the weeks of summer eating that we wait for all year long! For the last few years we’ve started corn in the greenhouse and then transplanted each corn seedling when it looks the size of a big blade of grass. This year the jump-start we gave the corn seems to have helped it through the drought, and I think we’ll have corn for everyone starting this week. It’s earlier than every before, and we’re pretty excited. While the corn loves this heat, other crops are really suffering (the cucumbers look as wilted as they usually do at the end of August) but between shuffling around the irrigation and praying for rain, we’re doing okay. Red House farm will be delivering their blueberries this week. If you signed up online, you will have a box waiting for you on the date that you signed up for. Bring $40 cash or check to pay at the pick-up. If you did not make it on the initial list in time, you can still sign up to get blueberries from another local, organic blueberry farm, Ewing Fruit Co. They will be delivering the following Sunday and Tuesday (8/14 and 8/16). If you put your name on the waiting list, I already added your name to one of those days. Anyone else is welcome to add their name to those days, too. Click on this link to double-check if you’re signed up for this week’s deliveries, and click on this link to add your name up for a Sunday or Tuesday delivery the following week. Both farm’s berries will be fresh, not frozen, and cost $40 per 10 lb box.
We said farewell this week to our wonderful apprentice, Abby Mulligan. She’s heading back to school but we know we’ll get to see her at the farm from time to time this fall. Thank goodness, because we already miss her!
If you haven’t made a CSA payment in a while, please take a moment to do so. You can pay online via our website or bring a check to your pick-up. We’re at the halfway point in the summer CSA!
Take note that the celery, if you get it this week, is stronger than grocery store celery! A little goes a long way. Have a wonderful week, enjoy the bounty, and if you get sweet corn in your share this week make sure to eat it asap! We pick it right before each delivery so you can have the sweetest corn possible.
