Summer CSA Week 12

The CSA email is going out a bit early this week! No exciting animal stories this week, I’m sorry to say — but a week with no stories means it was a peaceful one for our family! I will be out of town at a wedding and visiting friends on Saturday night and Sunday. Many thanks to the crew for making the Sunday CSA delivery happen without me.

The one fun animal thing is that this weekend we get to babysit – or pigsit – the piglet that our friend Tilia caught in the pig scramble at the Union Fair. We’re pretty impressed with Tilia’s pig wrangling skills and love that we get to borrow a piglet for the weekend! He’s a cutie, and his sleepover is taking place in a stall next to the calves in the barn, so they’re entertained by checking each other out. It’s definitely hard not to think about Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web every time he looks up at you (click here for the picture).

Even though it feels like we’re on the cusp of autumn with the start of school and cool nights, the summer CSA actually continues through the end of September. The fall CSA (vegetables and all fall add-ons) will begin the first week of October. There’s still space to sign up for the fall shares, but the vegetables will undoubtedly sell out before long, so let me know soon if you want to join for the six fall CSA weeks of October and early November.

If you want to add on the heritage apple or late summer pork CSA, you still have a week and a half to do so. The first deliveries will be in CSA Week Fourteen (the week of September 10th). There are still a number of folks who expressed interest in the apple share but who haven’t officially signed up yet, so please just reply to this email and confirm if you want to get in on apples!

At some point in the next couple weeks we’ll open up our basil patch for members to come and pick their fill. Whether you want to make pesto to freeze for winter or just would like to have more basil on your hands than you know what to do with, all members are welcome to come out to the farm and pick for free. I’ll send out a separate email with directions to the basil field when that opportunity is available. Another random offer, for anyone who has yearned for their own opportunity for a mini family milk cow: we’ll be selling a number of our sweet Dexter or Dexter/Jersey cross milkers this fall. If you or anyone else you know might be interested, send me an email and we’ll let you know more about the cows.

Remember that if you need to make a payment, there is a link at the bottom of this email to pay online. You can also always drop a check off at your pickup or in the “milk money” box at farm CSA shed. Also, our contributions to the Nepali women’s center will be wired out next week, so if you haven’t fulfilled your pledge yet, you still have a few more days !

Have a great week!
