What a gorgeous week! It was a relatively smooth first CSA week overall with our quick-learning crew. There was one moment of panic on Friday when we thought that our young bull, Logan, had gone missing. Last year two of our cows disappeared from one day to the next, never to be seen again, hence we’re now a little bit paranoid. When Logan appeared to be missing from the very same field on Friday afternoon, we shifted immediately into crisis mode. Bill, Jed and Aleena started scouting the woods and searching up and down the road. Then, after an hour, about to set off to search into the woods again, Jed turned around to look at the field and… there he was. Happily fenced in, hanging out with his buddies Porcello and No’ruz after all. He had probably been snoozing under a bush somewhere, too lazy to join his friends until the day started to cool. Hopefully that will be the final bovine-related moment of panic for the year, but I have to admit that perhaps the farm would be just a little bit boring without the periodic adrenaline burst brought on by livestock excitement.
We hope you enjoy the tender spring lettuce and spinach in this week’s share. Also included this week are baby Hakurei turnips along with their greens. These tender fresh-eating white turnips are a totally different creature than their large storage cousins, and these ones we picked extra small so that the greens are still bright and crisp. I’ve included a recipe that uses all parts of the Hakurei, but you can also use the greens in any recipe in place of a hearty kale or chard.
If you wanted to sign up for Summer Eggs but the share was sold out, the egg farmers have increased the quantity available. Just add them on to your account or let me know if you would like them! Finally, if you signed up for a spring Pork share, this is the week! If you won’t be at your pick-up, please let me know ahead of time so that I can leave it in the freezer at the farm. As always, please be in touch with any questions, concerns, or snafus. I’m always available (712-7382) by phone or text.
Have a great week!
