Summer CSA Week 12

The peach tree outside of our house is laden with fruit right now, and Maple the farm dog is obsessed. Not with the fruit, which occasionally fall on her head, but with the yellow-jackets that swarm the fruit. We try our best to keep her away from them, but if getting repeatedly stung in the muzzle isn’t a deterrent, we realize that there isn’t much else we can do. In Maple’s opinion, chasing after stinging pollinators is even more fun than chasing after a tennis ball. We’ve all got to find our fun where we can on the farm, after all.

Though we miss Marya and Cedar terribly, we’re excited that a new apprentice, Joshua, joined us on Wednesday. Joshua grew up in farm country in Nebraska, and we can tell that he’ll fit right in here. We’re entering the time of the season where the weeding starts to slow down and the harvest increases — each little husk cherry and each potato is picked or dug by hand. We so appreciate the work of our apprentices, of our hourly employees Christina and Becky, and of our dedicated volunteers for helping bring the harvest in.

This is a pork CSA week, so please let me know if you won’t be at your pickup and need us to hold your pork in the farm freezer. If you’re a milk or yogurt CSA member, please remember to bring your jars back to us, as we’ve been running short.

Have a great week and enjoy the late summer bounty!
