CSA Week 13: Cucumbers and Cummerbunds

It’s a big week coming up for the Hatchet Cove Farm family.  Eli will begin kindergarten this Tuesday, and we’re all gearing up for a family wedding next weekend in Boston.  While we’re gone, the apprentices will be holding down the fort, taking care of everything from  milking to the weekend CSA harvest and delivery.  Meanwhile, Eli and Cecilia will be in tuxedo and tulle, as the ring bearer and flower girl at a cathedral in downtown Boston.  Since Eli desperately wants to live in the city, this will be his trial run for the glamorous big-city life.  We’ll let you know how it goes!

As for veggies, we’re starting to shift into fall mode.  The big onion harvest will take place this week, and winter squash are nearing harvest as well.  Tomatoes are waning, and soon we’ll pull them out of the greenhouse to plant our fall salad mixes.

Our third cucumber planting has come on strong, and for anyone who wants bulk cukes for pickling, we’re selling 20 lb. boxes for $20.  These cukes are  approximately the sizes of the ones you’ve been getting in your share.  As for the other bulk items, kale is still available, as are green beans, but bulk tomatoes are sold out for now.

We’re excited to be giving beets and arugula in the same week, since that means its time for one of our favorite salads.  And for those of you in the cheese CSA, the feta is exactly what you’ll need to round it out.  Our friend Sara Hotchkiss gave us a tub of caramelized onions this week, and they are out of this world,  so we recommend making as much as you can.  Hence the two onions in this week’s share.

Have a great week, and feel free to come by the farm if you’d like to visit Sugar.  It’s so much fun having her here!

Be well,

Reba and the HCF crew
