At this time of year members often start asking how many more weeks are in the CSA, and people are often surprised to learn that we’re only halfway through the season. We’re at Week 11, and the CSA will go for 22 weeks in total, until early November. So keep eating with abandon — the veggies will be abundant for months yet!
We had a very exciting/gruesome discovery this week that CJ is encouraging me to to share in the newsletter. While we were harvesting tomatoes last Friday, CJ and I made the record discovery of SEVENTEEN tomato hornworms on one single plant! Hornworms are the distressingly large, disturbingly clingy, gruesomely juicy (when stepped upon) worms that can devour a large tomato overnight and defoliate a plant in a matter of days. And this one poor denuded plant had seventeen hornworms on it, from an inch to five inches long! It was horrifying and I was called upon by my child to dispatch them, to my great displeasure. I’m not sure that this was the story you all wanted to hear this week, but you can rest assured knowing that the hornworm hunting brigade is on duty, keeping the tomatoes safe and plentiful for your next CSA delivery.
If you have questions about your Sisterhome donation, I apologize for not getting emails out to everyone last week. In the meantime, if you have any questions please be in touch, and know that I’m still working on getting the emails out to you as soon as I can!
Corn should be coming in this week, and the only risk is that the raccoons will keep sneaking in to the corn field right ahead of us. We’ll keep trying to scare them off and fingers crossed everyone will get their fill before the critters do!
Have a great week, be in touch with any questions and enjoy the delicious salsas and meals that are going to be on your plate this week! Try the Green Shakshuka recipe… it’s a delicious way to use your tomatillos and greens for a quick and scrumptious meal.
