We got a pretty wonderful card in the mail this week, sent from across the country by a former apprentice (Carolyn) on the tenth anniversary of her time at the farm. Since a former apprentice (Faith) visited last week and another (Lila) is here this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about how each one of us can go about building family and community out of thin air, and how grateful I am for the apprentice and volunteer and CSA member tendrils that reach from our farm across the globe. With the reduction of CSA deliveries and harvests this year it has given me more space to enjoy the work and the community that comes from the work. So thank you to each of you for showing up with a smile and excitement on your face to the pick-ups, or for swinging by the farm late at night to get your veggies out of the walk-in. This bounty is meant to be loved and enjoyed, and the vegetables – and the meals created out of them – are the foundation on which our communities are built.
As our 2019 apprentice Karly leaves for the season this week, we will miss her willingness to get dirty, her probing questions, and her enthusiasm and love for all small creatures, be they animal or child or plant. WWOOF volunteer Anne also made it through to her last day (congratulations!) and we hope to see her back in Maine eventually!
If you are a pork CSA member, remember that this week is your second delivery. There are also about five spots remaining in the Apple CSA (your future favorite part of fall, I promise!). Let me know if you want to reserve one of those spots.
