CSA Week Three

So many good things this week!  One of the best treats from the farm, garlic scapes, were harvested for the first time this week (click here for a picture of CJ joining the harvest).   Scapes are the flower spike of the garlic plant, and are an incredibly delicious treat of the season.  They can be chopped and used in any recipe in place of traditional garlic, or sautéd till they’re nice and wrinkly in a little oil, salt and pepper for the best treat of all.  I crave them year-round, but since each garlic plants sends up only one scape, they are a fleeting joy!

This week also brought wonderful visits (and help!) from last year’s apprentices Patrick, Ben and Reanna.  It was so great to see all three of them and to hear how they’re thriving in their current exploits, farming and otherwise.  Also on the farm is a new guinea hen, which means that the ambient noise around here is a little louder than usual!  A broiler chicken harvest, plenty of weeding, planting and harvesting, three turkey poults gone missing, and milking two cows now that we have a new calf means that it wasn’t a quiet week in any way.  Thank goodness.

In your share this week is Napa cabbage.  While some members look forward to Napa cabbage so they can make fermented kim chi, others use it in place of “regular” cabbage in any slaw or salad.  It’s crisp and delicious.  And with cilantro and cabbage in your share, it’s a great week for tacos!

We hope you’re enjoying the CSA, and sharing great meals with family and friends.  Let us know if you have any questions about your share, and remember that there are far more recipes on our website.  Just click on the vegetable you want to use and you’ll find newsletter recipes from years past.  They’re all tried and true!

Have a great week,

Reba and the HCF crew
